Here's Maine Republican congressional candidate Dean Scontras during Tuesday's debate:
"I've taken a very clear stand on this. [...] I was never opposed to gay rights. I've never been opposed to gay rights. That's just not true."
You can see it for yourself beginning at the 4:45 mark in this video.
So, is it true that Scontras "was never opposed to gay rights"? Here's Scontras during a 2008 Republican primary debate:
"At the end of the day, my values and my courage are why I'm doing this. [...] It's very important that you know that I'm the only pro-life candidate in this race. And I know that there's sensitivities around this issue. And some people have suggested, and advised me early on, to change my position about that issue. But it's not, I will not do that. I can't do that. It's part of my principles. I'm the only candidate in this race that is against civil unions and for a constitutional amendment to protect marriage."
You can see it for yourself beginning at the 5:10 mark in this video:
Note Scontras wasn't just against gay marriage: He opposed civil unions as well.
