Hypocrisy: NOM Outraged That Pro-Equality Groups Use Same Tactics They Do

In a Tuesday blog post, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) lamented gay millionaire Tim Gill’s decision to spend money electing pro-equality candidates to the Colorado State House in 2012.
In a post entitled “Tim Gill Says: Vote My Way Or I’ll Dump $2 Million Against Your Party In Colorado,” NOM criticized Gill for donating money to defeat equality-opposing members of the Colorado House:
In 2006, Colorado voters rejected civil unions by a strong margin: 53-47%. (At the same time, Coloradans voted for an amendment defining marriage as "a union of one man and one woman" by an even wider margin of 55-45%).
Last week, the Colorado House Judiciary narrowly defeated a SSU bill on straight party lines, after it was passed by the Democrat-controlled Senate.
This decision comes as a bitter defeat to gay mega-millionaire Tim Gill, who has been pouring millions upon millions of dollars into Colorado for a decade to elect pro-SSM politicians (including $5 million in 2006 alone).

But what remains to be seen is whether or not politicians who conscientiously reflect the views of Colorado voters on marriage will be able to continue representing those views in office, if Tim Gill and his mega-millionaire friends have anything to say about it.
In fact, Gill is taking a page directly out of NOM’s playbook. In March of this year, as the Maryland House of Delegates fiercely debated whether to pass a bill that would have legalized same-sex marriage in the state, NOM announced the formation of its “NOM PAC Maryland,” pledging to spend “at least $1 million” to “hold Maryland legislators accountable” for supporting marriage equality:
NOM PAC Maryland will also oppose in their primaries any Republicans who support gay marriage. The PAC announced that it will target for defeat State Senator Allan Kittleman in his expected race for Howard County Executive.
“We don’t question whether Senator Kittleman or any other Republican who might support gay marriage is voting so out of political calculation or are voting their true beliefs,” said Brown. “But we do question whether such a vote is consistent with the desires of their Republican constituents. NOM has defeated every pro-gay marriage Republican we’ve ever targeted, and we’re quite confident Senator Kittleman will be next.”
It's important to note that in both Colorado and Maryland, NOM's efforts directly contradicted the will of the people.
As Good As You points out, this isn’t the first time NOM has used its financial power to target pro-equality politicians either.
When it comes to fighting against marriage equality, it appears NOM isn’t thrilled about the taste of their own medicine.
