Tony Perkins Compares Gays And Lesbians To Terrorists

Tony Perkins, president of the anti-gay hate group the Family Research Council (FRC), spent quite a bit of time comparing LGBT activists to terrorists during the April 29 edition of FRC’s Washington Watch radio show:

PERKINS: This has moved from cultural terrorism to corporate terrorism. That's what this is. Now, back in the 80's and early 90's I worked with the state department in anti-terrorism and we trained about fifty different countries in defending against terrorism, and it's, at its base, what terrorism is, it's a strike against the general populace simply to spread fear and intimidation so that they can disrupt and destabilize the system of government. That's what the homosexuals are doing here to the legal system.
The tirade came in response to King & Spalding's recent decision to drop its defense of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in federal court after coming under pressure from gay rights groups like the Human Rights Campaign.
As ridiculous as Perkin’s statements are, they’re not terribly surprising considering the source. Perkins and FRC have been peddling lies about gays and lesbians for years, including the myth that gay men are more likely to be pedophiles than straight men.
What is surprising, however, is the extent to which such a clearly homophobic and bigoted fear monger is treated as a credible source of information by mainstream media outlets. Perkins was invited onto Fox earlier this week to rail against same-sex adoptions. Last week, he wrote an article for FoxNews.com warning that the repeal of Don’t Ask Don’t Tell would weaken the military.
An incredibly depressing side note: Perkins isn’t the first right-winger to link gay people to terrorists. Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association, who was also a Fox guest this week, has previously called gay sex “a form of domestic terrorism.”
