Anti-LGBT Hate Mongers: Help Us, Fox News!

July 26, 2011 4:44 pm ET by Carlos Maza

Believe it or not, the leaders of some of America’s most prominent anti-gay groups aren’t too happy with the way Fox News has been covering LGBT stories lately. According to them, the network has been too lenient toward the LGBT community.

Last month, Maggie Gallagher -- chairwoman of the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) -- lamented Fox’s relatively slim coverage of New York’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage. During an interview with National Review Online’s Kathryn Jean Lopez, Gallagher asserted:

The base cares. The majority is still with us -- which is why gay-marriage advocates are never willing to permit a referendum, even in blue states.

But there is little “echo” effect. Conservative networks, not just liberal networks, have been shut down on this. Fox News doesn’t cover it. Even talk-show hosts who are with us hesitate to speak — why? Every one has a different reason, but it’s always a reason not to speak.

Last week, in an article for National Review Online, Gallagher again targeted Fox for failing to cover her claim about gay rights supporters’ alleged assault on the First Amendment:

Whole professions are in the process of being closed to anyone who espouses -- and acts -- on the view that marriage is the union of husband and wife.

Fox News is not covering this. Conservative media outlets, except for a few beacons such as NR, are virtually silent.

Gallagher’s frustration was echoed yesterday when Peter LaBarbera -- president of the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)-designated anti-gay hate group Americans for Truth About Homosexuality -- tweeted about Fox’s “neutral-to-lib coverage” of homosexuality:

To be clear, Fox hasn’t strayed an inch from its anti-LGBT agenda. Most recently, the network has been promoting the ridiculous “gay indoctrination” myth. Fox made a special effort to bash California’s FAIR Education Act, calling the law pro-gay “propagandaand an attempt to “brainwash” kids. Earlier this year, the network manufactured a controversy about a gender diversity lesson being taught in a California school, airing three segments on the subject in just two days. Meanwhile, the network almost completely ignored Rep. Michele Bachmann’s ties to “ex-gay” therapy. When Fox did cover the scandal, contributor Andrea Tantaros dismissed it as just an attempt by “the left” to make the election “about gay marriage.”

It’s pretty obvious that the network’s coverage of LGBT issues is anything but “neutral-to-lib.” Still, the fact that some of the country’s leading anti-gay zealots are concerned about Fox’s coverage speaks volumes about the network’s reputation for homophobia. Gallagher and LaBarbera know that serious news networks won’t buy into their extreme and bigoted propaganda, but they expect that Fox News will always be there to toe the anti-LGBT line.

Whatever gave them that idea?
