NOM President Claims Marriage Equality Will “Normalize Pedophilia”

August 18, 2011 5:23 pm ET by Carlos Maza

On August 18, the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) posted a “NOM Marriage News” update, written by NOM president Brian Brown, to its blog.

The update starts off tamely, touting NOM’s (sparsely attended ) bus tour in Iowa as well as the group’s marriage pledge, which several GOP presidential candidates have already signed.

The update continues with a section entitled “Normalizing Pedophilia”:

When you knock over a core pillar of society like marriage, and then try to redefine Biblical views of marriage as bigotry, there will be consequences. Will one of the consequences be a serious push to normalize pedophilia?

The Daily Caller raised the question by pointing us all to a high-level academic conference in Baltimore this week, "Pedophilia: Minor-Attracted Persons and the DSM: Issues and Controversies."

The DSM is the diagnostic manual that defines mental illness. You probably recall that a key moment in the gay rights campaign was the 1973 decision by the American Psychiatric Association, the organization that produces the DSM, to remove homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses.

[…]

Enquiring people want to know: Will pedophiles become "minor-attracted persons" in our culture? Will courts which endorse orientation as a protected class decide down the road that therefore laws which discriminate against "minor-attracted persons" must be narrowly tailored to a compelling government interest?

Here's the fundamental truth: Ideas have consequences and so do words—because they contain ideas, because they are the vehicle through which and by which human beings describe reality.

The reality that men and women need each other, and that children need a mom and dad, is the truth most at risk in the same-sex marriage debate. [emphasis added]

There you have it. The president of the National Organization for Marriage believes that allowing loving, committed gay couples to marry will result in the normalization of pedophilia.

Mind you, the brochure for the conference NOM is referencing does not mention the word “marriage” even once. It doesn’t mention anything about the government recognizing particular relationships. The event has literally nothing at all to do with the push for marriage equality.

What NOM is actually doing is attempting to compare homosexuality to pedophilia, as evidenced by the fact that Brown chose to reference the APA’s decision to remove homosexuality from its list of mental illnesses.

The comparison is nothing new for anti-gay hate groups like the Family Research Council and the American Family Association, which consistently attempt to link homosexuality to pedophilia in order to depict gays and lesbians as sexual deviants.

In the past two weeks alone, NOM has promoted the idea that homosexuality is a deviant, enslaving lifestyle that will “end your life prematurely” and should be criminalized. With this pedophilia comparison, can anyone seriously dispute that the group deserves to be labeled an anti-gay hate group?

UPDATE: On August 19, NOM's Ruth Institute also posted a blog entry on the APA conference, linking to a OneNewsNow article that contains this gem:

"For them to say that opposition to same-sex marriage is causing psychological distress among lesbians and gays, I mean these guys have it completely backward," [Peter] LaBarbera contends. "The reality is that self-described homosexuals and lesbians, they do have psychological problems because homosexuality is a perversion."
