FRC’s Perkins: “It Gets Better” Project Tries To “Recruit” Kids Into “Lifestyle” Of “Perversion”

August 19, 2011 3:24 pm ET by Carlos Maza

Leave it to someone like Tony Perkins -- president of the Southern Poverty Law Center-designated anti-gay hate group the Family Research Council (FRC) -- to try to use an anti-suicide campaign to gin up controversy and raise money.

In an August FRC mailer discovered by Right Wing Watch, Perkins attacked the Obama administration for participating in the “It Gets Better" Project, a campaign launched last year in response to a series of high-profile LGBT youth suicides. According to Perkins, the administration’s support for the campaign is “appalling,” “disgusting,” and an attempt to “recruit” kids into a perverted and “immoral” “lifestyle”:

This is the same Tony Perkins who has asserted that LGBT youth kill themselves because they know they are “abnormal.”

It’s the same Tony Perkins whom Fox relied on for commentary about a California school’s anti-bullying program (Perkins condemned the program as an attempt to “indoctrinat[e]” children “into homosexuality.”

It’s the same Tony Perkins who has a long history of appearing on major cable news networks to promote his agenda of anti-LGBT smears and misinformation.

More importantly, this is the same Tony Perkins whom every major cable news network still turns to for political commentary without ever mentioning FRC's hate group status.

What will it take for networks like Fox, MSNBC, and CNN to stop treating Tony Perkins like a credible source of conservative commentary and start treating him like the hate-monger that he really is?
