NOM’s Ally: Earthquake Is God’s Punishment For Shaking Your “Male Member” Where It Doesn’t Belong

August 24, 2011 5:37 pm ET by Carlos Maza

It was only a matter of time before an anti-gay extremist blamed gay people for yesterday’s earthquake.

Just hours after the earthquake ended, New York Rabbi Yehuda Levin posted a YouTube video  (which has since been removed for violating YouTube’s “hate speech” policy) in which he claimed that God was punishing the East Coast for shaking its collective “male member in a place where it does not belong.” Crooks And Liars captured the clip, relevant comments begin at 5:50:

LEVIN: We saw today an earthquake. The Jerusalem Talmud -- which is also around 1600 years old and verbally it goes back in terms of a tradition far more than that -- the Jerusalem Talmud tells us that one of the reasons that God brings earthquakes to the world is because of the transgression of homosexuality. And the Talmud states you have shaken your male member in a place where it does not belong, I too will shake the Earth.’ So, to those who sent out the e-mail, yes, there is a direct connection between earthquakes and homosexuality.

There was in Haiti and there is here in New York, in Washington, D.C., where they passed homosexual legislation and ordinances, in New York City and state, where they opened especially on Sunday early after they passed the homosexual marriage law. They couldn’t wait until the regular Monday, but all the county clerks had to open early to service the homosexual couples who wanted to get married.

Just last month, Levin blamed the murder of an 8-year-old boy on New York’s decision to legalize same-sex marriage.

This kind of commentary is what got people like Pat Robertson relegated to punch-line status, and for good reason. Publicly claiming that God is using natural disasters to punish America (and Haiti) for its moral failings is enough to ensure that no one takes you seriously.

That is to say, no one will take you seriously except for the National Organization for Marriage (NOM) that is.

As Good As You’s Jeremy Hooper has pointed out, Rabbi Levin played a featured role in NOM’s recent failed campaign to stop marriage equality in New York. He stood side-by-side with NOM’s President Brian Brown and Chairwoman Maggie Gallagher while asserting that marriage equality was a form of society “devolving.”

Unsurprisingly, NOM has yet to come out and condemn the ridiculous assertions of its ally.

In order to avoid being labeled a hate group, NOM tends to rely on rabidly anti-gay individuals and organizations to do its dirty work.

This tendency was on full display during the NOM’s May 15 marriage rally in New York. After claiming that the event was all “about love,” Brown stood idly by as rally speakers claimed that gays were “enchained and enslaved by homosexuality” and worthy of being put to death.

NOM should be held accountable for the right-wing zealots it chooses to partner with and give credence to when it’s convenient to do so. To paraphrase Hooper, the “direct connection” between earthquakes and marriage equality is much less plausible, interesting, and important than the “direct connection” between NOM and its anti-gay allies.

Note: If it makes Rabbi Levin feel any better, it appears that WorldNetDaily conspiracy theorist Joseph Farah agrees with him.
