Fox’s Starnes Attacks Pro-Transgender Miss USA Pageant Winner

June 04, 2012 1:44 pm ET by Carlos Maza

Last night, 20-year-old Rhode Islander Olivia Culpo was crowned the winner of the 2012 Miss USA pageant. During the competition, Culpo answered a question about whether it would be fair for a transgender contestant to win the competition, saying:

"I do think that that would be fair, but I can understand that people would be a little apprehensive to take that road because there is a tradition of natural-born women, but today where there are so many surgeries and so many people out there who have a need to change for a happier life, I do accept that because I believe it's a free country," Culpo said.

Fox News Radio reporter and anti-LGBT mouthpiece Todd Starnes reacted to Culpo’s win predictably – by making disparaging comments about transgender women and accusing Culpo of harboring “anti-American values”:

In the June 4 edition of his “Fox News and Commentary” segment, Starnes continued his mockery of transgender women, saying:

STARNES: Honestly, I’m not too sure the world’s ready for a beauty queen with little boy parts. The way I see it, if the good Lord didn’t give you the parts, you probably don’t need them.

This isn’t the first time Starnes has made inflammatory comments mocking transgender people. In his recent book Dispatches from Bitter America, Starnes wrote “I’d love to be a fly on the wall at the pearly gates on rapture day when all these folks have to explain why they’ve got extra parts the original models didn’t have.”
