NOM's Morse: "God Bless" Illinois Anti-Gay Hate Group

September 05, 2013 3:56 pm ET by Luke Brinker

National Organization for Marriage (NOM) spokeswoman Jennifer Roback Morse praised a far-right anti-gay hate group for its efforts to block marriage equality in Illinois.

In a September 3 interview on Lutheran Public Radio's Issues, Etc., Morse praised the "good guys" of the Illinois Family Institute (IFI), a Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC)-designated hate group. Ascribing the Illinois legislature's failure to pass marriage equality this year to the IFI's efforts, Morse proclaimed, "God bless the Illinois Family Institute":

NOM's leaders insist that their organization's "battle is not with an orientation" and that they're simply focused on denying same-sex couples the right to marry. But Morse's warm words for the IFI belie such assertions. As the SPLC noted, in 2006, then-Executive Director Peter LaBarbera called for all "homosexual establishments" to be closed.  LaBarbera blasted gays as "disgusting" and said he and the IFI would "find ways to bring back shame to those practicing homosexual behavior."

More recently, IFI Cultural Analyst Laurie Higgins has dubbed same-sex parenting "a form of child abuse." According to GLAAD, Higgins has also compared her fight against the "evil" LGBT movement with past struggles against slavery and Nazism, referred to homosexuality as "destructive foolishness," and denounced "deviant" gays. Higgins considers homosexuality a "tyrannical, oppressive, poisonous cultural force that compels conformity and compounds the suffering of children intentionally denied mothers or fathers."

The IFI not only denounces same-sex parenting under any circumstances,  but also advises parents to pull their child out of the classroom if he or she has an LGBT teacher - or, just as horrific, a teacher who teaches students that LGBT people exist.

God bless the Illinois Family Institute, indeed. Without them, we'd have a less clear idea what rabid anti-LGBT bigotry looked like.
