Discredited Anti-Gay Researcher Regnerus Teams Up With Group Working To Criminalize Homosexuality

Mark Regnerus, the disgraced author of an anti-gay parenting study, will join the right-wing Alliance Defending Freedom (ADF), which is working internationally to criminalize homosexuality, at a September event to pressure the United Nations to take measures "respecting life and strengthening the family."

Anti-gay organizations rejoiced in 2012 when Regnerus produced a study purporting to find that children of same-sex parents fared far worse physically, mentally, and emotionally than children raised by heterosexual parents. Experts panned the study as junk science. They noted that Regnerus didn't compare married gay parents to married straight parents, failed to establish a causal relationship between same-sex parenting and negative outcomes, and neglected to differentiate among different types of same-sex families. Most telling was that Regnerus' study received much of its funding from the right-wing Witherspoon Institute, which is tied to anti-gay groups like the National Organization for Marriage (NOM).
Regnerus' participation in the ADF event marks the latest sign that he's not an objective scholar, but a culture warrior working to advance an anti-LGBT agenda. The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) reported in July that the ADF has sent members of its legal team to Belize to defend a law making "carnal intercourse against the order of nature" punishable by up to 10 years in prison. There's no indication whether the ADF will petition the UN to support similar policies in other countries.
