The anti-gay right is not happy with all the media attention that Marcus Bachmann’s “ex-gay” clinic has been receiving this week. While Fox News has remained predictably silent, CNN, MSNBC, and ABC have all extensively documented the Bachmanns’ ties to “ex-gay therapy,” raising serious questions about Rep. Michele Bachmann’s (R-MN) viability as a presidential candidate.
As you might expect, a number of conservatives have rushed to the Bachmanns’ defense, grasping for straws as they attempt to downplay the significance of the couple’s extreme anti-gay politics.
Check out the five most ridiculous right-wing attempts to explain the mainstream media’s focus on the Bachmann “ex-gay” scandal:
5. They’re Bashing Christians!
Peter LaBarbera, president of Americans for Truth About Homosexuality:
Folks, it sure didn’t take long for the liberal media to go into Christian-bashing mode against GOP presidential candidate Michele Bachmann (R-MN).
4. They’re Bashing Conservatives!
Stephen Bennett, writing for WorldNetDaily:
Bachmann is Christian and conservative. She has a rapidly rising base of like-minded supporters all across the nation. However, Christian and conservative are two adjectives liberals and many within the mainstream media absolutely abhor.
This female fireball and evangelical powerhouse – who very well can be our next president – has been deemed a political threat and one who must be taken down in the media – now.
3. They’re Afraid The Therapy Will Work!
Greg Quinlan, president of Parents and Friends of Ex-Gays & Gays:
[B]ecause even one ex-gay proves that homosexual behavior is not innate or immutable, the gay lobby’s fear of their former members results in false claims and attacks aimed at preventing homosexuals from exercising their right to self-determination. They cannot bear to have even one homosexual leave homosexuality, hence their outrage at Dr. Bachmann.
2. They’re Trying To Make The Election About Gay Marriage!
Andrea Tantaros, co-host of Fox News’ The Five:
This is what the left is doing now. They’re trying to take this jobs-economy election and trying to turn it into an issue about gay marriage.
1. They’re Bashing Her Because She’s Right On The Economy!
S.E. Cupp, on the July 15 edition of MSNBC’s Martin Bashir:
CUPP: I think this makes for a really perfectly-timed story. When everyone else is talking about the economy and it's really hard to make her look dumb, let's make her look scary. So then the media starts to look for these kooky, quirky, religious social issues stories.
BASHIR: No, no, no, no. S.E., that's not fair.
CUPP: Because they can't talk about her positions on the economy because they're better than Obama's would be.
You have to give these people credit for being so creative.
In reality, the media’s focus on the Bachmanns' “ex-gay” clinic probably has something to do with the fact that “ex-gay therapy” is ineffective, can cause serious psychological harm to patients, and has been discredited by the major medical organizations in the U.S. The fact that the Bachmanns co-own a clinic that offers this kind of therapy speaks volumes about the GOP presidential candidates animosity toward the LGBT community and provides insight on how Rep. Bachmann might treat the community if elected president.
The mainstream media and the American public are right to be worried.
