Fox News Relies On Anti-Gay Zealots To Promote Homosexuality-Pedophilia Link

August 25, 2011 4:08 pm ET - by Carlos Maza

In just one month, FoxNews.com has promoted the bogus connection between homosexuality and pedophilia on three separate occasions.

On August 11, the website posted a column by Fox News contributor and anti-gay pseudoscientist Dr. Keith Ablow, in which he compared homosexuality to pedophilia and asserted that both gays and pedophiles could alter their sexual orientations as a result of environmental factors.

On August 25, FoxNews.com posted yet another Ablow column  -- "Paving the Way for Condoning Child Rape” -- in which the “Fox News Medical A-Team” member lamented a recent symposium put together by B4U-Act, a group that seeks to reduce the stigmatization and stereotyping of people who are attracted to children:

But, now, there should be no doubt that our culture is poised to begin embracing pedophilia as a lifestyle choice, just like homosexuality. A group of psychiatrists and other mental health professionals called B4U-Act, which has representatives from Harvard and Johns Hopkins, gathered recently in Baltimore to organize their push to change the negative perception of pedophiles and encourage them to get help in a nonjudgmental environment.

While B4U-Act is not representative of mainstream psychiatry, and while the American Psychiatric Association (APA) did not participate in the group’s meeting, psychiatry has a history of caving into cultural pressure to stop defining controversial illnesses as pathological. You won’t even find ego-dystonic homosexuality—meaning, homosexual impulses that cause an individual to feel distressed and which that individual does not want to give into—in the DSM, anymore. [emphasis added]

On August 24, FoxNews.com published an article, also covering the B4U-Act symposium.

While the majority the article focused on the outcome of and reactions to the event, Fox couldn’t help but bring up a comparison between homosexuality and pedophilia:

Critics of the effort also note that the movement likens its fight for pedophilia acceptance to society's more recent embrace of homosexuality. They warn of a slippery slope to a time when pedophilia is "just another lifestyle choice" that won't warrant criminal charges—and will leave young children at risk.

This wasn't a minor article on Fox's site; it was prominently displayed on the front page of FoxNews.com:

Fox doesn’t make clear which “critics” are making the pedophilia/homosexuality argument. Still, it’s safe to assume that it came from one of the two opponents of the symposium interviewed for the article. So who are they?

One is, of course, Peter Sprigg from the Family Research Council (FRC), which has been designated an anti-gay hate group by the Southern Poverty Law Center. This is the second time Sprigg has been cited in a FoxNews.com article in two days. Sprigg authored an FRC report which makes the claim that gays are more likely to molest children than heterosexuals. Sprigg is also no stranger to promoting anti-gay animus through major news outlets, having publicly called for the criminalization of homosexuality and the exportation of gay people out of the U.S.

The other critic quoted in the article is Dr. Judith Reisman. Fox doesn’t bother to mention it, but Reisman is a vocal proponent of the ‘gays are pedophiles’ myth. She is the author of an essay entitled “Where Are The Arrests Of Thousands Of Men Who Give AIDS To Boys?,” in which she claims that gays are seeking to recruit and molest young boys, giving them AIDS as a result:

Homosexual males molest boy victims far more often than heterosexual males molest girl victims. Psychologist Eugene Abel reported homosexuals, “sexually molest young boys with an incidence that is occurring from five times greater that the molestation of girls.”

It’s important to note that this kind of anti-gay propaganda fits perfectly into Fox’s ongoing narrative that gays are trying to ‘indoctrinate’ and corrupt young children.

When a political organization promotes this kind of misinformation, its labeled an anti-gay hate group.

When a news organization promotes the same misinformation, it apparently calls itself “fair & balanced.”
