NOM’s Morse Continues Race-Baiting Over LGBT Equality

November 15, 2011 11:39 am ET - by Carlos Maza

The National Organization for Marriage (NOM) has never hesitated to resort to race-baiting in its campaign against marriage equality. On Monday, however, a top NOM employee made clear that marriage wasn’t the only issue over which the group would willing to gin up racial tension.

In a November 14 blog post, Dr. Jennifer Roback Morse, president of NOM’s Ruth Institute, lamented a new banner ad campaign in California encouraging gay couples to adopt and foster children during National Adoption Month.

Morse’s post was filled with typical anti-gay talking points, but one paragraph in particular stood out for its shameless attempt to stoke racial division:

And look at the children in these posters.  I wonder what the African-American community thinks about recruiting gay men to become foster parents for the children of their community who have been taken from their parents.  Do the African-American pastors have any thoughts and opinions about this? I imagine they do. But I will let them speak for themselves. [emphasis added]

This isn’t the first time that NOM’s Morse has attempted to draw the fight over LGBT equality along racial lines. Last month, she called President Obama “more gay than he is black” because of his support for LGBT groups, adding that he panders to gay people because he thinks “blacks don’t have that much money.”

And Morse’s comments are just the tip of NOM’s race-baiting iceberg. Earlier this year, a former NOM employee admitted that the organization was fixated on “exploiting blacks” as part of its “public relations strategy.” In New York and Maryland, the group has worked to draw the fight over marriage equality along racial lines, even hyping the claim that same-sex marriage is the agenda of “white urban liberals.”
